Color Freed From Reality
Fauvism shocked the art world at the start of the 20th century, earning its nickname “wild beasts” for bold, unrestrained color choices. Fauvist oil painters abandoned the rule that colors must copy real-world objects. A tree could be bright red, a face could be emerald green. They used oil paint’s strong saturation to express raw emotion rather than optical truth. Thick, direct brushwork and high-contrast color blocks became their signature. This movement broke the long tradition that color existed only to describe form. Fauvism proved oil painting could use color as an independent emotional language, clearing the path for later modern art experiments.
