The Evolution of Oil Painting Canvas Materials

Canvas material is the foundation that supports oil painting art. Early artists used rough linen canvas; modern creators can select linen, cotton and blended canvas according to creation purposes. Linen canvas has strong tensile strength and stable texture, ideal for large permanent oil paintings. Cotton canvas is softer and more affordable, widely used for hand-painted decorative oil paintings for home use. The upgrade of canvas expands the boundaries of oil painting creation.
