Understanding Glazing Technique in Classical Oil Painting

Glazing is one of the most magical oil painting techniques. Instead of thick paint, artists apply thin, transparent color layers over a dried underlayer. Each glaze is almost see-through. Light passes through the transparent paint, bounces back from the base layer, and creates rich, luminous depth impossible with opaque paint.

Renaissance and Baroque masters relied heavily on glazing for skin tones and deep shadows. A single skin area may need five or more thin glazes. Artists must wait for one layer to fully dry before adding the next, which stretches creation time for months. Modern painters sometimes combine glazing with impasto. Glazing brings softness, while thick impasto adds texture. This ancient method still helps painters build glowing, lifelike color in portraits and still life.
