Oil Painting on Wood Panel: Pros, Cons and Preparation Guide
Wood panels have been used for oil art long before stretched canvas became mainstream. Hardboard, birch panel and mahogany offer rigid, non-bending surfaces perfect for fine detail and small-format oil works. Unlike canvas, wood will not bounce under brush pressure, so artists can draw precise lines and apply thin glazes without movement. However, wood needs careful sealing with gesso and isolation layers to stop acids or resin from ruining oil paint over time. It is heavier than canvas and more prone to warping if exposed to extreme moisture. Many realist and miniature oil painters prefer wood panels for portrait studies and detailed still life. When sealed correctly, wood supports create stable, crisp oil paintings with a smooth, intimate surface quality.
